Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata (HITK) – A Deep Dive

1. Introduction & Legacy

Heritage Institute of Technology, widely known as HITK, is a private autonomous engineering institution located in the Anandapur area of south-east Kolkata. Established in 2001 by Kalyan Bharti Trust, HITK operates under the affiliation of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology and gained autonomous status from UGC in 2017. This progressive institution has built a reputation for its academic rigor, holistic development, and continuous innovation across two decades.

2. Academic Programs & Admissions

HITK offers a wide spectrum of programs:

  • Undergraduate (B.Tech): Specializations include Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering (AEIE), Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), Computer Science & Business Systems, and Biotechnology.

  • Postgraduate: M.Tech branches like AEIE, CSE, ECE, and professional degrees such as MBA and MCA.
Admissions are routed through WBJEE (80%) and JEE Main (10%), with the remaining 10% filled through management quota. Lateral entry via JELET also exists for diploma/B.Sc holders, enabling second-year entry.

3. Campus & Infrastructure

Spanning approximately 10 acres, the urban campus features three major buildings—Central Block (CB), ICT block, and CME block—interlinked via covered connectors. A high-capacity, fully Wi-Fi-enabled central library (~20,000 sq ft) with a rich collection supports scholarly activity. Additional assets include air-conditioned lecture halls, well-equipped computer labs, department-specific labs (e.g., VLSI, Robotics, Structural, CAD), a medical center, cafeteria, convenience store, auditorium (Swami Vivekananda Auditorium), separate hostels for boys and girls, common rooms, and extensive sports facilities—football, basketball, cricket, archery, and more.

4. Academic Culture & Faculty

HITK emphasizes Outcome-Based Education, project-led learning, and frequent industry interactions via workshops and guest lectures. Over 150 highly qualified faculty engage students with a favorable student–faculty ratio. The environment blends theoretical foundations with hands-on experience, promoting a culture of innovation and critical thinking.

5. Placement Excellence

The institute’s placement cell collaborates with leading employers—Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Capgemini, Cognizant, HP, and Tata Advanced Systems.
Recent placement highlights:

  • 2024–25: ~90% placement, highest package up to ₹40–44 LPA, average ₹6 LPA.

  • 2022–23: ~70–80% placement, highest package ₹44 LPA, average in the ₹4–8 LPA range.
With rigorous pre-placement training—mock interviews, career guidance, personality development sessions, and support for competitive exams (GATE, GRE, CAT, GMAT)—students are well-prepared for placement success.

6. Research & Global Collaborations

Unique partnerships connect HITK with international institutions like University of Massachusetts Lowell, NJIT (USA), and Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea), enabling student exchanges, dual-degree programs, and joint research initiatives. The institute also supports research in areas such as Robotics, Data Science, Renewable Energy, Embedded Systems, and Structural Engineering, securing funding from national and international grants.

7. Campus Life & Student Culture

HITK fosters holistic development through an active selection of 20+ clubs—technical, cultural, coding, robotics, literary, entrepreneurship, dance, drama, and more. Cultural fests like “Eclecia,” “Dakshh,” and freshers' meet “Nascent” were highlights pre-pandemic. Post-2020, institutional challenges hampered large-scale fests, though efforts resumed with smaller inter-club events by Anubhav, Ghungroo, Pravasana, and Resonance.

8. Extracurricular Engagements & Achievements

Students shine through events like inter-college prototype design competitions and hackathons. For instance, teams have won accolades for awareness-themed designs and emerged winners at state-level anonymous hackathons with cash awards, exemplifying the creative and competitive spirit of HITK’s students.

9. Student Perspectives

Current and former students often highlight a vibrant and flexible campus culture:

“If you want to enjoy college life, Heritage is best. No dress code, great infrastructure, student council runs fests…”
“The computer labs are like heaven… clubs like Geeks United, GDSC add to the vibrant culture.”
While there are occasional observations about management decisions or fest organization, most students appreciate strong peer engagement, approachable faculty, and ample opportunities.

10. Recognition & Rankings

  • Ranked in the NIRF engineering band of 201–250 (2022).

  • Recognized among top private engineering colleges: 69 (Outlook India 2024) and 130 (India Today 2024).

  • Accredited with NAAC 'A' grade, NBA approval for B.Tech & M.Tech programs, UGC recognition, and AICTE approval.
